I Am ___ : Week 3
What happens when the worst moment of our lives becomes the label we wear every day? This message dives deep into one of the most liberating truths of the gospel: our failures are something we experience, not something we become. Drawing from the powerful account in John chapter 8, where a woman caught in adultery is brought before Jesus in her most exposed and vulnerable moment, we see something remarkable unfold. Rather than joining the crowd of accusers, Jesus reframes the entire situation. He does not pretend her sin did not happen, but he refuses to let that moment become the final word over her life. The same accusers who dragged her forward slipped away one by one, leaving her alone with the only one who was actually qualified to condemn her, and he chose grace instead. There is a critical distinction woven throughout this message that has the power to change how we see ourselves: guilt says we did something wrong, but shame says we are something wrong. Guilt can actually draw us back toward God, while shame drives us into hiding. Understanding that difference is not just a psychological insight, it is a spiritual lifeline. We were never created to carry shame. And the good news is that the cross already dealt with it.
Chapter 1: The Trap of Shame and How It Defines Us
0:00 - 10:05
We explore how shame, unlike guilt, causes us to define ourselves by our failures and run from God rather than toward him.
Chapter 2: Failure Is Something You Experience, Not Your Identity
10:05 - 19:35
Scripture shows us that God refuses to let the worst moments of people's lives become who they are, and Jesus removes condemnation even while taking sin seriously.
Chapter 3: Grace Rewrites Your Story
19:35 - 31:10
Jesus meets us in our worst moments not to condemn us but to offer forgiveness, calling us to leave our sin behind and step into a new identity.
Chapter 4: A New Creation with Scars That Testify
31:10 - 46:07
In Christ we are made entirely new, and even our scars can become evidence of God's grace and a testimony of his victory in our lives.
