Day 2: The Unexpected Gift of Trials

Reading: James 1:2-4; Romans 5:3-5

Devotional: "Consider it pure joy" seems like an impossible command when facing genuine hardship. Yet James isn't asking us to pretend suffering doesn't hurt or to manufacture fake happiness. He's inviting us to recognize the hidden opportunity within every trial: the chance for our faith to grow stronger. Just as muscles only develop under resistance, faith only deepens through testing. Without challenges, our faith remains theoretical, untested, and weak. God doesn't cause every hardship, but He promises to use each one to develop endurance, character, and hope within us. The joy James speaks of isn't found in the trial itself, but in knowing that God is actively working through it to transform us. When we trust Him in the darkness, our faith becomes real, forged in the fire of genuine struggle.

Reflection Question: What current trial might God be using to strengthen your faith and character?
