Real Faith for Real Life Wk3

Nov 16, 2025    Seth Barber

We find ourselves confronted with a powerful truth from James 2: mercy triumphs over judgment. This message challenges us to examine how we treat others, especially those who walk through our doors looking different, smelling different, or coming from places we might judge. James warns against segregating God's children based on status, appearance, or wealth, reminding us that when we judge by externals, we disqualify ourselves as trustworthy judges. The sermon draws a stunning parallel to the Ark of the Covenant, where the mercy seat literally sat atop the law—a beautiful Old Testament picture showing God's heart has always been mercy over judgment. The law condemned us, but the blood sprinkled on the mercy seat covered that judgment. Two thousand years ago, Jesus shed His blood so mercy could triumph over judgment in our lives. Since we've received undeserved mercy from a holy God, how dare we stand in judgment of others? We're called to lead with mercy, meeting people where they are and walking with them to where they need to be. This doesn't mean lowering standards—we hold them high while extending grace. Mercy allows us to step into someone's story and celebrate their progress from where they came, not judge them by where we think they should be. The challenge is clear: will we be people who lead with mercy and compassion, remembering what God redeemed us from?
